If you don't know already, Codeweavers ( http://www.codeweavers.com/ )
also the makers of the CrossOver Plugin (allows you to use QuickTime,
ShockWave Director,Windows Media Player 6.4,Word Viewer, Excel Viewer,
PowerPoint Viewer and More Inside a Linux Webbrowser...
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover/ ) has released CrossOver
Office ( http://www.codeweavers.com/products/office/ ) Which basically runs
MS office in Linux Via WINE, w/o the need for a Windows Partition or
License.
There have been a couple News Sites covering it (News Forge:
http://newsforge.com/newsforge/02/03/27/0444257.shtml?tid=15 )
What would be interesting to see is how well this program would work in a
LTSP environment. I think it would provide yet another point for k-12linux
in that even if your school isn't ready to move away from MS Office, you can
still move away from Windows. Even better it would allow a transition
period from MS Office -> StarOffice/OpenOffice, so that students and staff
could still use MS products when it is required, but have other, free
options available.
What I would like to see, if anyone out there with a Running LTSP lab could
comment on how well it performs(or even if it works at all).
(sorry mods, I forgot to change my email account to send from so this same
thing is waiting your aproval)
