I do something similar to the above idea for OpenOffice. I don't believe
StarOffice is any difference except the default installation directory
name is different. I change mine to '.openoffice' to keep it hidden from
the users. The file '.sversionrc' in the user's home directory points to
the installation directory.

I created a generic user named 'golden' and setup various software such
as OpenOffice and Mozilla. When a user signs in for the first time (or
whenever the login script discovers that the user's directories do not
exist), the login script copies the applicable directories to that
user's home directory and changes the permissions. It also replaces the
username 'golden' with the user's username in any necessary files.

I've done this for OpenOffice 1.0 and 1.1 and am having no problems.
