OK, then yes it looks like there is something listening on port 7100, although it also looks like the xfs service is not starting at boot. I say this because after issuing the restart command it failed to shutdown, but started OK. After starting it this way, issuing the restart command gets a successful shutdown and restart of xfs.


Yes, I have since tried to bring X up again and an X session started up. I then tried booting a terminal and it would get an IP address from the server and that was about it. From /var/log/messages it looks like the problem lies with gdm
