Subject: WA-EDTECH Internet Filtering Costs
Reply-To: Jim Friesen <jim friesen esd112 org>
Background:
Kelso School District has been using St. Bernard Software's iPrism
Internet filtering appliance for three years and has been very pleased
with the product, with little downtime or maintenance required.
Unfortunately, St. Bernard has announced it is discontinuing support
for our model. While the new hardware costs are reasonable, annual
license/support costs have increased dramatically. The three-year cost
is four times the original cost paid by Kelso. Other districts in the
area using iPrism have received similar notifications. While Kelso
would like to continue with iPrism, the increase in license/support
costs make it difficult.
Question:
Is this cost increase comparable to what you're seeing for Internet
filtering support renewals since CIPA? I'm familiar with WebSense and
Symantec Web Security, but what is your district's experience with
other filtering software/hardware? Recommendations on alternatives?
