Definitely try changing the CDROM.  This sounds exactly like the old
problem I had.  It was very frustrating to wait for an hour install just
to find out it didn't work and try a small change and go again with the
same results (I know I'm preaching to the chior now).

Mine reads just fine from the CD, it just won't boot after the install, 
from the hard drive.
