What the heck's a pager? Isn't that what alt-tab is for?
A pager allows you to have multiple virtual desktops. I often have
multiple windows open for a given project, and alt-tab only allows me to
switch between individual apps. A pager allows me to switch between
virutal workspaces, with all of the apps appropriate for that workspace
on it. It's just a different way to work.
If you only have 2-3 apps open at the same time, task-switching is
probably appropriate.
In my case, it's not uncommon for me to have a remote desktop connection
open to one of our Win2K servers on one page, several putty windows open
to linux boxes on another page, and e-mail and browser windows open on a
third page. I might even have Excel or a PowerPoint document that I'm
working on open on the fourth. More commonly I use that fourth page as a
scratch window, for the quick, impromptu projects that come across my
desk regularly. Each page has it's own "mindset", and switching between
the pages allows me to mentally switch gears in a way that simply
alt-tabbing through them doesn't do for me.
Gosh, that explanation got a lot longer than I thought it would - hope
it helps :)
