hmm just the type of amswer I needed to justify opening another case :-D . 
Actually just starting the system & stopping kudzu in the service  or in the rc3 / rc5 level startup files would also work more siimply. The issue is not in stopping kudzu but in the proper configuration of the NICs. Since I don't know all the files that have to be edited/created it is a little daunting. :-(

Norbert,
    the first thing to do, is to disable kudzu. There are many ways,
the most brutal of them is to rename /usr/sbin/kudzu and make a link of
kudzu to /bin/false. This is NOT a well thought out method ;-)
    There are not that many files to be edited to set up networking
and the gui while helpful, is not necessary. julius
