How much pain can you endure? How important is it that the system be 
working come next Monday?

My advice would be to restore your old working system and then write "I 
will not experiment on my production server" 100 times. ;) (This is a 
lesson I have learned from experience more times than I would care to 
admit.)

Then set up another box for the new system, install, configure, test and 
migrate. It's just not worth it to mess with your production server... IMHO
