[K12OSN] Setting up an HP 1000 printer

Hi gang

One of the schools where I am slowly installing K12LTSP "clean" labs 
went out and bought HP 1000 printers- they have a USB cord (server 
side) connecting to a fancy serial port on the printer. Try as I may, 
I am unable to configure: local/usb un-rem'd... Has anybody 
configured one of these babies already? (there's no budget for 
gizmos).

Theoretical and real experience suggestions welcomed.
