My test update went fine as well. It didn't magically fix all the
things I still need to fix, such as the apt repositories, but it
didn't spew errors and eat my harddrive ;-).

ACPI is there, it is just disabled by default. Add the "acpi=on"
option to /etc/grub.conf, reboot, and enjoy.
