Take a look at LinuxPrinting.org
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1000
It's a GDI, or host based, printer with not much in the way of smarts internally.

Hi gang

One of the schools where I am slowly installing K12LTSP "clean" labs went out and bought HP 1000 printers- they have a USB cord (server side) connecting to a fancy serial port on the printer. Try as I may, I am unable to configure: local/usb un-rem'd... Has anybody configured one of these babies already? (there's no budget for gizmos).

Theoretical and real experience suggestions welcomed.
Cheers
