I think a lot of the credit goes to prelink. I noticed a huge discrepancy in clclamav RPM build times between my laptop (1.6 GHz Celeron - 260 seconds) and my desktop (1.47 GHz Athlon - 35-40 seconds). After running prelink on the laptop, the build time dropped to about 50 seconds.
Aside: if you're looking for a free (in both senses of the word) email virus scanner, you might check out clamav. It seemes to be working pretty well for me (3 installations, including a K12ltsp 3.1.1 server).
