There is a program called badblocks that is run when you
use the -c option to mke2fs that checks the media and locks
out an spots with errors.  However, modern IDE drives already
have internal remapping for bad sectors and are in pretty bad
shape by the time the controller sees errors.

If it is less than 3 years old you may still have a warrantee (currently
you get 1 year from most vendors, but the older, longer ones still
apply).   Check the vendor's web site for return information and
for a downloadable utility for diagnostics and repair.  You may
be able to enter the drive serial number and get an RMA and
shipping instructions for replacement.

If it is more than 3 years old give up and junk it.
