The transfer rate on current IDE's isn't much different than SCSI and
with DMA they don't consume the whole CPU like they used to, but
they still can only have one outstanding command per controller.  A
Mac might do fairly well with a few external firewire drives to spread
the seeks around - or the Xserve raid box if you need that much.
