What I tend to do is,
apt-get update
then
apt-get dist-upgrade -u
and answer no
then look through the packages and
apt-get install package1 package2
that way I can select which packages I want to upgrade, i've been
holding off installing openoffice upgrade as last time I had a nightmare
with the .files
As usual YMMV
