How can a group owner drop a file into a user's folder and have the file

A few ideas...
1) email homework to students

Good idea.

2) have teacher-student group for each teacher/student pair and use a folder with group write permissions

Ouch, in a high school that would mean something like 6 * count(students) groups to maintain. I suppose in a very small school that could work, but it'd get pretty unmanageable quickly.

3) Create a folder for teachers to drop work in, and have the students copy from that folder to their own - of course, this wouldn't work if you're sending individualized files (say, for example, corrected documents).

Tough question Eric - aren't you supposed to be the one with the answers? :)
