I have successfully installed and used K12LTSP at my former school. This
got me a new job. I am now a Project manager, in charge of installing
Linux on every school in our town. My success has been noticed. I built
my own server back then, dual PIII, 1GB RAM and a SCSI disk. This server
serves 20-30 users daily. Now with a lot larger budget I will buy the
servers from a supplier.
I would like to get more out of the boxes. I know that in our Windows
Terminal Server environment for the teachers and other employees in the
city, we have more than one terminal server, one fileserver, a
mailserver, a printserver and a databaseserver. How would this be with
K12LTSP? Is there anyone of you who has set up K12LTSP in a big environment?
Our setup would be like this: We have nine schools, 5 of wich are
connnected through a fiber network. 9 are outside the town core, so they
will connect to us through SDSL. I am thinking that more than one school
could share a TS, with the setup I mentioned earlier with more servers.
So how do I setup K12LTSP to utilize an application/fileserver, a
mailserver and perhaps a db-server? Are there any programs in the
K12LTSP suite who could benefit from a separate db server?
One last question, are IDE disks coming along or is SCSI still the only
way to go?
I would appreciate any help you may have on this. I value the knowledge
on this list, and always listen to your input. These are exciting times,
to my knowledge, my town is the first in Norway to go all the way with
Linux.
