You are correct that running X on top of OSX is sluggish. I had better
luck when I booted into a single user environment and only had X running
with the query option, faster very usable, but still not up to my
standards (a 300MHZ terminal with Intel hardware faster than a 600MHZ
mac). I imagine the way you suggest would be the fastest, just haven't
had the time to get one running and compare yet.

I should try that. Do you suppose, since I have Fink on my iBook that I could boot to single user mode and startx then startkde and have kde running without aqua? I'm going to try that. Or, perhaps I would have to find KDE for Darwin without aqua, or something.
Honestly, though, I can run OS X apps like Keynote alongside KDE apps and still see my iBook outperform a PC with twice the CPU.
Let's see, last year for a prodev unit I taught on finding and using internet resources in the curiculum, I ran netscape, keynote, and openoffice.org all at once, then started KDE (with Fink) and demonstrated gPeriodic and kstars all at once on my 7oomhz G3 with 640mb ram.
She didn't even blink.

Now, seems I've been sleeping on the list...Did I hear someone say K12ltsp for PPC? That would an answer to a dream! I found a whole stash of older Macs in a closet at school and was thinking about reviving them with YDL, but if I could shie -em up with K12, I'd be grinning.
