Nah,
Compaq just included the appropriate drivers, and reworked some DLL's.
In one instance MS actually included the Compaq fix into later versions
of the vanilla install.
Try changing the time inside Win9x and then go back and check the BIOS
time.
I vaguely remember a rumour that early versions of MessDos were written
to overcome an FPU error in early Intel processors.
