X_MOUSE_PROTOCOL = "Microsoft"
X_MOUSE_DEVICE = "dev/ttys0"
worked for me..

Thanks for the "bump", fellas. Between the two suggestions (above, I am now
able to use the MAC address of the NIC to assign a static IP and host name,
and my serial mouse and AT keyboard work correctly! I need to configure the
sound module but I will do that on another day. Right now, I'm VERY happy to
have a client netbooting and logging into the k12ltsp server with a useable
session.
Thanks again to all!
