The "free" command helped me grok this:
$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 502 478 23 0 31 330
-/+ buffers/cache: 117 384
Swap: 517 18 499
This is a single login on FC 1, running gnome, mozilla, and a
gnome-terminal. 23 MB are free; 384 are being used for buffers/cache.
Neverwinter Nights must still be cached. ;-) As long as swap usage is
low, you're doing fine. If you really want to know what's using
memory, run top and press shift-M. Look at the RSS column.
