Les,
yes, it might have been better, on the other hand i can't afford
sudden retirement. There were 2 main reasons i decided to take a deep
breath and step back: 1. memory usage, 2. unpredictable problems for some
users. Explanation: 1. - it is very difficult to see worse performanse on
an upgarded server. 2 months ago i went from dual piii 1GHz to dual Xeon
2.4, but the heavy memory use on v4.0 threatened the efficiency of
processing, buffer cashe size was especially worrisome. i'll monitor
memory usage very carefully next 2 days. 2. - problems that can be fixed
for good are fine, problems that go away to come back like a chronic
ilness are not good. i'm thinking a large company with very small it
staff. if i'm not there, who will take care of the niusance problems? I am
going to watch like a hawk the 3 most troublesome users and their
terminals. if problems resurface on the old version, i'll make sure to get
to the bottom of them.
and of course, there is a reason number 0: playing with linux
servers is supposed to take no more than 5% of my time. in the last 3
months it ate almost all of it. this is not good, since i'm resposible for
*all* the computing, wans, lans, wlans, phone services and large pieces of
erp software development. the last one is very, very important. i owe 2
objects to my senior business software developer. she is very patient, but
her patience is wearing thin. it would not be so bad by itself, but we've
been married for over 25 years, she can make my life really difficult ;-)
