This sounds like your bios is unable to load the kernel
from wherever it landed on the hard drive.  I'm not sure
if it is still necessary, but I always put a small (30 to
100 meg) /boot partition at the start of the boot drive
to avoid any bios limits.  I'm not sure this always happens
if you take the default layout. Also you might need to check
the setup to be sure bios is seeing the same disk geometry
as Linux.
