Took me a minute to find sndconfig (/sbin/sndconfig)
Running it from terminal, it gets as far as the point whereit should 
play the test sound and disappears/crashes.
When I run the gui Sound Card Detection from System Settings menu, I 
just don't hear anything when it gets to that point.
