They do vary quite a bit, especially if you use the tools that the
distributor developed. In my experience, configuring those services on
different distros varies primarily by the location of the configuration
files, the "style" of the init scripts, and the package managers used to
install those services. If you are hand (or script) editing those files,
there is very little variance that I have seen.

This is very true, and I would never presume to ask Eric to take on
other / more projects just to suit my whim or anyone else's. This thread
was started because I wanted feedback on my idea, and if it was not
being considered already, to put the same idea into other's people
head's so they could chew on it and test its merit, and perhaps inspire
some other people to action. I apologize if any one saw it as an attack
of some kind.
