Thank you for your answer Alasdair.
That means my filter line should just read:
filter = [ "r|/dev/cdrom.*|", "r|/dev/cdroms.*|" ]
which means "skip (reject) all devices matching those two regexp
and scan (allow) anything else and ir works for me.
