Clock running fast?

I've just recently installed RHEL4 update 1 on an Althon 64 machine (a
Compaq Presario 1440 if that makes any difference) and the clock seems
to be running about twice as fast as it should be (xclock -analog
-update 1 is quite entertaining).
Looking at /proc/cpuinfo it says that the CPU frequency is 994.954MHz
but in the output of dmesg it says the CPU clock frequency is about
2200Mhz. This is with an x86_64 kernel.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?
