You can try doing ctrl-backspace or alt-backspace as a temporary
workaround. But this is most likely not a CentOS problem, how many CentOS
boxes have this problem and how many RHEL boxes do you have ?
If you upgraded the machine (and have leftover configuration files,
system-wide or use-specific) that influence the terminal emulation, this
is most likely the cause. Try creating a new user and see if the problem
is the same if you log on with that user. If so, it's most likely
system-wide.
