Thanks for the replies everyone, I did give Sev's suggestion a go but I still got the 
mount failures in /var/log/messages in addition to the debug stuff in /var/log/debug
So I surrender to using grep etc to sift through /var/log/messages

A configurable autofs module would certainly be very nice, I will look into that 
suggestion when/if I get time.
