compile a module for the smp kernel?

Hi,
  I'm trying to install a kernel module without much success.  I've
installed kernel-devel, and pointed the module source at the correct
directory.  It compiles fine, but when I try to insmod it, I get
an error:

insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.9-5.0.3.ELsmp/misc/dgnc.ko': -1 Invalid module format

If I reboot into a the non-SMP kernel, the module works fine.  Is
there some way I can get my hands on an SMP version of kernel-devel?
