This is intersting. It would appear to be an oversight. RHEL4 includes
ext2online which allows online resizing, but only supports growing a
filesystem not shrinking it. I can only assume that not including
resize2fs, which allows offline growing or shrinking a filesyste, was an
oversight as it's included with RHEL3.
My guess is someone thought "Why would we include two different resize
tools?" not realizing that the online tool won't shrink a file system.
I think I'd file a bug.
