Ed,
Having done some extra digging I think you may well be right about
the lack of libstdc++.so.2.8 et al. in RHEL4. I found the following
post on the German Fedora list from last month which illustrates the
shuffling of some of the libstdc++ and older libc files between Fedora
Core 2 and Core 3.
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-de-list/2005-February/msg00069.html
The fact that the libraries do still exist in FC3 but not in RHEL4
may well be a decision Red Hat made regarding support issues.
Alternatively it is a genuine oversight in the distribution. It might be
worth raising a bugzilla query to get a definitive answer, or perhaps
someone else on the list will be able to confirm compat-libstdc's status.
Thanks for your extra effort.
Being a RNH subscriber and since most RH folks on this list have said
bugzilla isn't the place to file trouble reports for RHEL products I've
submitted a Web Support request on their support site.
When I get an answer to Service Request Number: 504276 I'll let the list
know the answer.
Thanks again,
Ed
