I am sorry. In all the excitement, I forgot to mention 2 facts:

1) You don't have to be root on RH 4.0 to be able to mount the USB
drive automatically. I was able to mount it form a non-root user
account.

2) File Copy Speed Test on Linux 
Data Size: 830808 KB (830 MB) 
Trasfer Time: 3m50.813s (3 mins and 50 secs)
