I do agree however that a better out of the box minimal install would be
a good thing.

Much of the bloat is really due to the lsb stuff, but not all of it is. Install
only Core group (no Base), and you should be fine.  See my previous email for
how. Even some stuff from Core could probably be trimmed, but not much of it. Add stuff that you actually need manually. Would be nice (esp. for firewalls)
if it was possible to have kernel, shell, and couple of supporting libraries
and utilities (so that you can actually log onto console and do some basic
tasks) as one really minimalistic group, and then adding things by hand as they
are really needed on the box.
