Probably because it is located in /etc/lvm/backup, not in /var/lvm.  Execute
"vgcfgbackup" and you should see your LVM configuration backed up into
/etc/lvm/backup.


Indeed, it is in /etc/lvm/backup. But that directory is empty, there is
nothing I could restore.

Try running vgcfgbackup as root. Inspect the files it creates in /etc/lvm/backup directory and see if they make sense. Specifically, look for any suspicios physical volumes that should not exist.
