problems compiling kernel-smp-2.6.9-39 for x86_64

I'm trying to recompile this kernel for XFS support. I just downloaded the kernel source RPM with up2date today. I've remade kernel.spec as is now good and proper, set up my .config, and made oldconfig. When I try to make, here's what I get:

[root snaapy kernel-2.6.934.ELsmp]# make
 CHK include/linux/version.h
 CHK include/asm-x86_64/offset.h
/bin/sh: arch/x86_64/kernel/asm-offsets.s: No such file or directory
 UPD include/asm-x86_64/offset.h
mv: cannot stat `include/asm-x86_64/offset.h.tmp': No such file or directory
make: *** [include/asm-x86_64/offset.h] Error 1

Any ideas on this? I've done some web trawling and it looks like downloading a new kernel source or remaking kernel.spec fixes this for other people, but neither has worked for me.
