U2 won't restart

I'm putting together a small RHEL4/ESu2 box with an MSI K8MM-V mobo,
Sempron, 512M RAM, and 40GB SATA as a primary nameserver for a client.
It will replace an ancient RHAS2.1 box that finally crumped. A minimal
(GNOME, SSH, BIND) installation was uneventful, but the system stalls
whenever I init 6 it:

        Please stand by while rebooting the system...
        md: stopping all md devices.
        md: md0 switched to read-only mode.
        Restarting system.

At this point it must be power cycled to recover -- not good for a
system that must be administered remotely :-( . The system is running
off-line with the stock 2.6.9-22.EL kernel and will probably need a few
errata updates when it goes on-line in its new home this weekend.

I've set up several RHEL4 systems but haven't encountered this behavior
before. Anybody have any ideas/suggestions?
