I'm not sure what you mean by "unmodified" or "bad idea" but VMware has
supported many operating systems running the 2.6 kernel in the ESX 2.5.x
series for quite a while now. If they support it they must not think
it's a very bad idea.
RHEL4 U2 is a very recent addition to the "supported" list for ESX 2.5.2
with a special driver disk and tools version, but it does seem to work.
That being said, I've been running RHEL4 for months on ESX 2.5.x systems
without any major issue other than not-so-stellar performance.
ESX3 beta is definitely showing better performance with RHEL4 though.
