using your script, I see the script finishing but it just takes
as while (on both SMP and non-SMP machines)...

I'm still looking into this, since there has been an recent upstream
fix in this area, but I just wanted make sure we a seeing the same
thing...

What I'm calling the "failure behavior" is that the script takes a
long time to finish -- twenty-some minutes on stock rhel4u2 in
our operational
configuration.  That makes rhel4u2 unusable for us.  In rhel3u4,
the script completes in well under a second.  And it does that
running on rhel4u2 if you install the 2.6.15 kernel from
kernel.org.

As part of the Service Request work (Service Request 807468)
Red Hat requested, and we provided, sysreport output from our
operational system and strace output from running the test script.
Those files are available on the Service Request web site.
