I experienced the same problem although I didn't get to wait to see the
error messages. System hung for several minutes on autofs and then on
nfs quotas even though ypserv and ypbind started fine. Booting single
user and downgrading ypserv made everything happy again.

Another problem I saw was booting with a serial console enabled and
having the kernel hang after 'freeing kernel memory'.
