Quoting John Horne <john horne plymouth ac uk>:
Apart from the fact that Vmware don't support RHEL4, my understanding is
that the problem with kernels above 2.6.9-5 is that the Buslogic (and
LSI?) SCSI drivers don't work.
They do support it. You should use BusLogic (virtual) SCSI controller
and device drivers for it provided by VmWare. You should also use
updated vmware-tools (downloadable from the same place on VmWare's web
site).
If we need to recompile the driver, does that mean I have to rebuild the
kernel as well, and if so how do I do that if we can't initially get the
2.6.9-34 kernel running?
You should be able to compile the driver only. The source (and
instructions) are included on driver disk. The instructions also tell
you how to create new driver disks (for newer or custom kernels)
yourself. I haven't done this yet, but seems to be possible. My guess
is that VmWare will place updated driver disk to their web site
relatively soon. You might need to install kernel-devel package (not
sure).
