You didn't say which release of RHEL4 you were trying to update
to. If
you weren't using the installer discs for RHEL 4 Update 3 (which was
just released) I suggest that you download those ISOs from RHN and try
it with that. If you are installing from the media that came with a
RHEL box set then you were almost certainly working with the original
release, even if you just purchased it.

I have both SATA and Ethernet controllers on a couple of machines
which
didn't work with the original release of RHEL 4 but now work with
RHEL 4
Update 3 as the drivers were updated.
I don't have any Silicon Image 3112 controllers in use that I can
think
of, but I do have at least two servers happily running with Silicon
Image 3114 controllers (running RHEL 4 Update 3).
Hrm, yeah I'd seem some positive comments about the 3114s.
