Quoting Joshua Baker-LePain <jlb17 duke edu>:
I may well have had a bad card, but it didn't give me confidence in
add-in SATA controller cards. When I need one, I hate to say it, I
just use a 2 port 3ware 8006 card. They're not cheap (relatively
speaking), but they're *solid*.
The trouble with using 3ware with only one disk is if you ever buy
second disk and try to mirror, it'll tell you that it will destroy data
on *both* drives. I'm currently holding off creating mirror on one
8006 because of this (more or less full 250GB drive on my home PC --
not easy to find some temp place for all of it).
Adaptec, on the other hand, has option to copy data from old drive to
new drive when creating mirror.
