I ended up filing a trouble ticket with RedHat on this one.  They've
confirmed the issue and supposively have a fix for it.  However, like you
said it didn't make it into U3 and I haven't been able to get anyone to
send me a pre-release copy.  This has effectively halted our RHEL3 to
RHEL4 upgrade path as I'm on a contract the requires that we be able
to provide server metrics.
