You mean other than them being 2 different commands written by different
people?  (Except for David MacKenzie that is...)
No :-) Rainer means that "rmdir -v" writes its diagnostic messages to stderr while "rm -v" writes its diagnostic messages to stdout. Both send error messages to stderr.
