Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has criticized the computers'
design, including its lack of a hard disk drive — though many people
in the tech world believed he was more irked by the laptops' use of
Linux, the free, open-source system that competes with Gates'
proprietary Windows systems.

If being in the third row is being close to Negroponte, I can respond :-).
He did say it. He also said that they will/did Geode prototype boards
so that they could bring up Win CE. My guess is this is part of the
"let the customer decide what software to ship" idea. I didn't get
the impression that significant numbers of $100 laptops would ship
with Win CE.
He also used 500 Mhz number. That's AMD marketing talk. Except for
jg's writeup, I think most of the laptop.org uses 500 Mhz.
He said that the talk was being taped. If someone finds a link, could
they post it?
