The Qemu images should work fine on any other system that can run qemu,
but there may be patches that qemu and/or the kernel needs to reliably
run things like jffs2 and other bits. AFAIU, there is also some
trickiness WRT compilation of qemu as well.
So; while nothing (nor should anything) prevent the image from running
on other distributions, you probably need to have a fairly recent
version of qemu and a fairly recent linux kernel.
