Dear Friends in Open Source:
Within my field of research (Buddhist Studies), as with most other
humanities research disciplines, the possibilities of the digitization and networked
delivery of research data is making a profound impact. Thus it has
become quite common at major international conferences for there to be a panel specially
dedicated introducing the projects underway in this area. Since I have
been playing a central role in this area for some time, more often
than not, I am the one who is asked to organize such panels--on a steady
basis for several years now. When I make my own presentations, I often
tend to do an overview sort of thing--a "state of the field of
computerization of Buddhist Studies."
At a major international conference to be held in Bangkok in December,
I will again be making this kind of presentation. But this time the
theme of my presentation will be the introduction of the concept of
Open Source--especially focusing on the way that researchers in the
humanities disciplines can learn from the OS model of
knowledge sharing. I will also be trying to make my largely unitiatied
colleagues aware of the ethical and political implications of
continued unconscious usage of Microsoft software.
I know that there are mountains of material out there on the web at the
various related sites, but I would like to ask for your help in
providing references to solid articles that treat the underlying
philosophy of Open Source. I will probably start off by introducing
the "Cathedral and the Bazaar," but anything else along these lines
that might be useful will be much appreciated. Of course, when my
paper is finished, I will make it available to all of you through my
web site.
Regards,
Chuck
