Re: [OS:N:] Re: Open Source in Schools and then some

Evan,

That again was the point. Computers are changing the face of
society. Which is sociological change. So, in response to your
earlier letter I am not going to "give you a break" and I will not
dismiss this just because you believe the model does not affect
_your_ daily life. The fact is legislation is changing _our_ lives daily
(which is evidenced in the DMCA), and people need to hear this,
so they understand what they are giving up. As far as that goes they
are not just giving it up for themselves, legislation today provides the
precedents for tomorow. Do you really want to start the next
generation off in the hole with less freedoms than they have today, and
precedents to maintain that state?

The fact of the matter is people to easilly disregard Open Source
developers and users as "zealots" and "just preaching" when in fact
the time has come when rights are being flushed down the drain. It
is time to get educated, listen and learn. It is time to get prepared for
coming legislation, and make sure that big monies interests are not
stripping away our freedom to share ideas and information to best
assist in growing tomorows generation.

This is what is on the line, freedom. It is not just about box placement
in stores. Open Source is not just a boxed product, it also stands for
a freedom of people to collaborate on a public work to provide the best
product, or any product for that matter. Take that away and you will be
watching infomercials while waiting to connect to your ISP, and paying
to get into IRC rooms. What is freedom worth to you? It is worth
protecting for me as I have a daughter in college, a nephew in high
school and one in grade school, and I want them to have the best
chance to succeed.
