You would think so, but they arrange special terms with OEM's re: that
CD. The intent is that you will never run anything on that PC but
Windows, and further that it should be the default state they ship it
in.
They include a lesser product for a lesser price to the vendor, or
allowed the vendor to create their own version. You didn't "buy" the
full M$ version, and therefore aren't entitled to it. In fact many of
these can't even be upgraded, using an M$ upgrade product (the install
stops and tells you you need to purchase a full version. OEM EULA
itself differs from Upgrade EULA which differs from full boxed product
EULA. You buy pre-installed, you buy the rights to that install, and
that recovery CD. Some (like Dell) ship a fuller version of Windows on
CD, but it's EULA is still different than the retail product.
Remember, M$ puts value on the copy, not the bits. The only way you are
allowed to install multiple machines from single copy is under site
license EULA's. Technically, believe it or not, if you buy two boxes of
Windows for two machines, you are *supposed* to install one machine from
each copy, not that they'd likely enforce it if you had the license and
media in your possession.
Can they stop you from borrowing this friend's copy? No, (AFAIK) they
don't differentiate physical media from one another, and couldn't track
it, but it would be in violation of the EULA, etc...I doubt they'd
enforce it unless you were "caught" during an audit.
I know. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You should be buying an
entitlement to use Windows, but you aren't.
